REAM is one of an active work
group (officially registered in
Myanmar) operating on Renewable
Energy related services for
Rural Development and
Environmental Conservation.
Idea to establish this
association was evolved since
1993 with the activities of
basic need power fulfill
function at remote villages. In
1995, founders group was
actively participating in “State
Fuel Wood Substitution
Committee” as private members
and did many public education
activities on practical
application of Renewable
Energies to alleviate the energy
shortage problem and also aiming
to protect the environment.
Those activities became more
efficient in 1998 due to State
encouragement on private sector
participation to solve the
current problems of fuel and
environmental conservation.
Organization set-up activities
started in that year and
application for official
registration was made in 1999 as
a national NGO under Myanmar
Association Law. At the moment,
the association is functioning
thoroughly in implementing the
aimed objectives and work plans
together with other private
associations (NGOs), business
farms, and international
organizations and also with
government departments.
REAM believes that efficient
coordinating action - with
others including local
inhabitants, professionals,
technicians, micro or small
enterprises and same objective
oriented organizations - is a
real necessity in combating
energy and environmental
problems. At this preliminary
stage of organization
establishment, we are practicing
a local networking strategy with
prompt and flexible management
system with adaptable tactic to
suit current local situation of
project area. REAM participates
in possible collective functions
with network partners by
executing together
systematically as mutually
agreed plan or respective
project regulations.
To be sustainable in development
functions with proper
achievement, applicable
network-scheme and work
procedure become important and
now REAM and partner groups are
exercising to exploit a workable
networking scheme by practicing
some joint actions.
Ultimate aim of REAM is to
upgrade the awareness and living
standard of people who live in
remote areas of Myanmar by
exploring and promoting
Renewable Energy Technology
(RET) application activities. At
the moment, we focus
particularly upon accessible
remote places where the
situation of inhabitants’ daily
energy requirement is
threatening their environment to
deteriorate. Ecological backlash
of this happening will lead to
enormous bad consequences to the
whole area. This kind of
ecosystem deteriorating pattern
is common. Proper energy source
is their critical need.
Effective fuel substitution and
making them convinced themselves
by providing suitable project
funding with necessary services,
technologies, materials and
education trainings are
necessary right now, before the
whole ecosystem is damaged.
Varieties of activities had been
done in such remote areas. We
find and believe that the
projects without community
participation – top down plan -
cannot get good result and
sustainable achievement even
high expenditure is applied.
Community participation cannot
be created without practically
adopted system management and
locally acceptable work
procedure.
Our (REAM) hypothesis is
mutually beneficial networking
strategy among practicing
atmosphere, including inhabitant
community is essential for
success.
