Presentation of GRET Myanmat
In 1995, GRET signed the first MOU with Myanmar Agriculture Services, Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation. Since then GRET has been involved in a number of development projects (Agricultural Development, Food Security, Agriculture Oriented Income Generation, Micro Finance) in Myanmar.

So far, GRET has initiated the development of Micro Finance Institution in Northern Chin State. GRET was also an implementing partner for one of the UNDP’s three major MFIs in Shan State (1997-2005).
Currently, GRET is implementing the following agricultural and food security related projects
- Food Security and Natural Resources Management in Northern Chin State
- Food Security and Poverty Alleviation in Northern Rakhine State.
- Livelihood Security by Agriculture Oriented Income Generation Activities for Vulnerable Population in the Northern Rakhine State
The main funding agencies are the European Commission and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The operational partners are World Food Programme (WFP) and Norwegian People Aids (NPA).

Our vision
GRET-Myanmar envisions Myanmar with the improvement of sustainable economic and livelihood development among disadvantaged population in the rural and urban area of the country.

Mission
To design and implement projects related to agricultural development, food Security, poverty alleviation, agriculture oriented income generation, ,micro finance and establish sustainable institutions and networks in the country.

Goal/ Main Objective
To improve the food security and livelihood situation of rural population by supporting the development of sustainable agriculture systems, enhancing income generation activities and building the organisational capacities of the local actors in Myanmar.


I. Food Security
In order to achieve the objective of food security, GRET-Myanmar ideally takes 2 main components of Food Security and Income Generation into account in designing and implementation of the projects.

1) Food Availability
 
•
Main Objects
    » To improve food availability through the development of sustainable farming systems and Natural Resources Management (NRM).
    » To increase agricultural production through high quality agriculture inputs and services

  • Activities
    » Changing of the management of plants, soil, water and nutrients to increase the productivity of irrigated rice.
    » Introduction of organic fertilizer, organic pesticide, System of Rice Intensification, sustainable Agriculture Land Technology and
       improved cultivation methods for vegetables.
    » Provision of know-how on improved livestock breeding and feeding methods and animal health care
    » Promotion of farmers led extension and Farmers Field Schools (FFS) to disseminate tested innovative practices (experimentations,
       demonstration plot, farmers field days).
    » Technical and Organizational support to the seeds growers and animal health workers
    » Support to land access for paddy production during summer season
    » Support to Agricultural Inputs Store as platform of development
    » Organisation of Farmers to farmers training
    » Provision of "Food for Work" for participating in the training and dam and dykes construction activities.


2) Access to food (Income generation and creation of job opportunities)

    » To improve the food security of vulnerable households by integrated income generation activities taking into account gender,
       environment and sustainability
    » To create networks related to income generation activities at grass roots and at institutional levels.

  • Activities
    » Vegetable and small animal production and fingerling production activities to improve the income of vulnerable families.
    » Assist the vulnerable households with home yard gardening and vegetable cultivation practice along the rivers and streams.
    » Training and gardening practice and low cost technologies to reduce the rainy season hunger gap.
    » Support to local educated youth providing training and equipment
    » Support to the development of financial mechanisms enabling the diversification of economic activities
    » Provision of training on basic economic, marketing, small business management


3) Food Utilization
  •
Main Objects
    » To introduce renewable energy technologies related to food processing in order to lower deforestation and protect environment.
    » To increase the production of value-added commodities from agriculture produce through small-scale and low cost food processing
        technologies

  • Activities
    » Introduction of solar cooker and dryer.
    » Demonstration of the alternative technologies for food processing to save the consumption of firewood
    » Support to the production of value-added commodities.
    » Training of women group on fruit processing technologies to encourage the production of added value commodities (apple jam and
