Deutsche Welthungerhilfe (DWHH)/German
Agro Action (GAA) was founded in
1962 in Germany as the national
committee of the "Freedom from
Hunger Campaign” by the UN Food
and Agricultural Organisation (FAO)
with the aim to eradicate the
underlying causes of hunger and
poverty in developing countries.
Today, it is one of the largest
German NGOs, working in some 70
countries worldwide. DWHH/GAA is
non-profit making,
non-denominational, and
politically independent. Its
programmes are funded by private
donations and public grants.
Major donors are the Federal
German Government, Commission of
the European Union, World Food
Programme and other UN
organizations, German Bank for
Reconstruction and Development,
USAID, World Bank and others.
Our vision is a world free of
famine and poverty; we campaign
worldwide for sustained
development, a guaranteed food
supply and conservation of the
environment. The long-term
perspective is the eradication
of the underlying causes of
hunger and poverty. We regard
our work to be successful if
people improve their living
conditions to extend that they
can enjoy a secure livelihood
without external assistance. The
guiding principle is “helping
people to help themselves”.
Whenever it is possible,
the
organisation on cooperates with
local NGOs and self-help groups
to achieve its goals.
DWHH/GAA core areas are food
security and natural resource
management, basic infrastructure
including drinking water supply,
emergency aid and
rehabilitation, support of
vulnerable children and youths,
crafts and small business
development, as well as
healthcare and HIV/AIDS.
DWHH/GAA began working in
Myanmar in 2002 by supporting
several projects of the national
NGO “Metta Development
Foundation”.
Since signing the Memorandum of
Understanding with the Ministry
of National Planning and
Economic Development on
31.03.2004, DWHH/GAA began
self-implementing projects while
also continuing with
co-operation and support of
local organisations.
The regional focus is presently
on Northern and Southern Shan
States, including Wa Special
Region 2, as well as poor
Townships in Yangon Division. We
plan to extend our support also
into the Dry Zone. The main
sectors we are working in are
integrated food security,
agriculture, water & sanitation,
rehabilitation of social
infrastructure, local capacity
building and community
development. Most of the
projects directly address food
and livelihood security, partly
through emergency aid, but
mostly through integrated
sustainable development
approaches.
