CESVI FOOD SECURITY PROJECT IN PYIN OO LWIN

Cesvi - an independent lay association founded in 1985 - is today one of the most important humanitarian organizations in Italy.
The words “cooperazione e sviluppo” (cooperation and development) in the Cesvi acronym define the end purposes of the association: fair and sustainable civic and economic development among peoples, implemented by helping the poor people of the world through joint cooperation.
Not with charity and handouts, but by designing and supporting development plans that make use of local resources and mobilize of the population.
Since 2001, CESVI is the first Italian Ngo to operate in Myanmar. Cesvi is one of the few Italian NGO’s operating in the country, active since 2001 in the health sector, mainly in disease control activities focusing on malaria prevention and treatment.
In August 2007, CESVI started its Food Security activities in Pyin Oo Lwin (Mandalay Division), thanks to a partnership agreement with the European Commission.

6. Target Area 76 Villages in Pyin Oo Lwin Township, Mandalay Division.
7. Target groups

Highly vulnerable households living in 76 villages, particularly pregnant women, mothers, children under-5, primary school children, poor high-land satellite farmers (around 36,000 people).

8. Project Objectives

Overall objective:
to improve livelihood conditions of the targeted communities by tackling underlying causes of poverty and promoting active participation at grassroots level

Specific objective:
to improve food security performance indicators in the targeted areas through a participatory and sustainable approach aiming at improving the access and the use of food (quality and/or quantity of food consumption), promoting water and sanitation correct behaviors and practices, improving the efficiency of basic health facilities in 76 villages in Pyin-oo-lwin Township, Mandalay Division.

9. Expected Results 1) Highly vulnerable households in 76 villages have increased food consumption in terms of quantity and
     quality (nutritional value)
2) Selected households, students and young children living in 76 villages have access to improved water &
     sanitation facilities
3) Targeted people in the 76 villages have better access to basic health facilities and receive more efficient
     public health services.
10. Main Activities Establishment of Village Food Security Committees. Organization of Advocacy meetings at local and regional level.

Establishment of kitchen-gardens and food preservation units (like Korean pickle) for poorest/vulnerable households.

Support to poor hill-side farmers in shifting from a mobile to a permanent farming system.

Cooking, feeding, and nutrition promotion for mothers, pregnant women, and primary school children.

Peer hygiene/nutrition promoters training, water quality testing and awareness raising training, care-taker training, project-staff’s capacity building training.

Hygiene promotion for pregnant women, mothers, and Children.

Construction/Renovation of water micro-systems (Dug Wells, Shallow Tube Wells, Low Pressure Gravity-flow Piping Water Systems and Ground Tanks, Low Running Cost Lifting Devices, Rain Water Collection Tanks).

Construction/Renovation of rooms of latrines with hand- washing facilities.

Health-staff’s orientation and refresher training;

Provision of clinical instruments and water facilities to Rural Health Centres;

Development and distribution of IEC materials and BCC tools;

Facilitate participatory impact review/evaluation exercises.
